The Rules of Fencing

-Do not fence without all of the required protective equipment.
-Use proper conditioning and warm-up exercises before beginning vigorous workout or competition.
-Check the fencing area and equipment for hazardous and unsafe conditions.
-Practice and compete only under qualified supervision; check with the instructor.
-Adhere to established rules and regulations of the fédération Internationale d'Escrime.
-Refrain from and prohibit theatricals or horseplay in practice or competitive areas.


Proper equipment includes:

-A well-fitted mask with a strap across the back and attached bib
-A proper fitting jacket with fasteners in the rear that completely seal
-A glove that covers the sleeve of the weapon arm
-Fencing knickers to protect the legs
-Women fencers must wear breast protectors
-Underarm protectors (plastrons)
*Beginners should use blades that bend easily


Factors contributing to catastrophic injuries in fencing are:

-A completely unprotected head
-A fallen mask during the action
-The mesh of the mask fails and is penetrated by the blade
-The mask-bib interface is penetrated by a blade
-The jacket interface is penetrated by a blade
-The blade breaks and penetrates the clothing of the fencer
-A fencer uses faulty or dangerous technique


The object of fencing is to hit the other person without being hit. It is a sport based on dueling practices, unique because like many martial arts the object is to hit the other person, simulating a debilitating injury. Fencing is susceptible to common sports injuries, but because fencing is predicated on causing injury, there is a greater chance that catastrophic injuries can occur.
The method of instruction and organization of material taught in class is based on the system employed at the Scuola Magistrale Militare di Scherma in Rome.
