FencingFencing is the noble, historic art of offense and defense with a sword. The object is simple: for one fencer to hit another without being hit first. Its application however is more complex, scientific and artistic.Fencing developed into a true sport in the 17th century when the sword was replaced as the basic weapon by gunpowder and firearms. Swordsmanship developed into a strategic finesse sport in which the objective became the touch vice the kill. The objective of fencing is not to inflict an injury but to demonstrate an ability to outmaneuver and hit an opponent. The rules and social behavior of fencing reflect its original purpose, the duel. The excitement and romance of the sport of serious dueling remains as each fencer attempts to protect him or herself from his opponent, while trying to find an opening in the opposition's defense.Fencing is much safer today thanks to protective clothing and flexible, blunted blades which are always used while participating in "bouts." |

Accademia di Scherma Classica
Our classes are based on the system of instruction developed by the celebrated Military Masters School in Rome (Scuola Magistrale di Scherma) with certain modifications based on the precepts of the earlier Military Fencing Masters schools in Parma (Cesar Enrichetti), Milan (Giuseppe Radailli), and the Livorese school (Eugenio Pini and Beppe Nadi). We teach proper form, technique and discipline essential for the development of the complete fencer, one with a repertoire of techniques that can be strategically employed effectively in any situation. Unlike many fencing schools, we recommend that students purchase a textbook. The Science of Fencing by Maestro William M. Gaugler (Laureate Press, 1-800-946-2727) contains a complete description of the method of instruction used at Accademia di Scherma Classica. At Accademia di Scherma Classica we believe that fencing should be fun. Bottom line. Whether you are a world-class competitor, or a beginner, if you are not having fun then you're not doing it right. Students are considered part of an extended family and elitist attitudes are not tolerated. We offer group and individual lessons, footwork and conditioning exercises, fencing games, and directed bouting (electric and dry). |
