Paul G. Scherman,
Master at Arms

Maestro Scherman earned his Master at Arms certification from the Fencing Masters Program at San Jose State University . He is currently a faculty member at the Fencing Masters program and conducts classes at Accademia di Scherma Classica, one of California ’s premier classical Italian fencing studios.  Maestro Scherman is well versed in the classical Italian fencing system and teaches the weapons foil, saber and épée.
With over two decades experience in the art of fencing, Maestro Scherman believes fencing is a skill that, like a musical instrument, takes time to master. Technical ability and fencing theory must become second nature in order for a fencer to be effective in combat. He does not believe in teaching tricks or "secret thrusts" that mislead the student to believe that they will achieve instant victory. A complete fencer takes time to develop. Practice, discipline, hard work, and determination lead to the complete fencer.
In addition to fencing, Maestro Scherman has worked in stage combat for the past 15 years. While training to be a stuntman he became involved with the Society of American Fight Directors and participated in a number of technical workshops, where he studied with SAFD fight masters and certified instructors and other theater professionals. He continues to work in the Bay Area with theater professionals as a fight director, stage combat instructor, and actor.
He holds a Bachelors of Science degree in Kinesiology (Exercise Nutrition and Wellness) from California State University , Hayward . He works as a Foodworks™ nutritional consultant, is a certified personal trainer, aqua aerobics instructor (Health and Fitness Institute) , and proudly serves in the United States Navy Reserve as a journalist.
